A Brief History Of Atlantis

The Forgotten Six Flags Water Park in Hollywood, Florida

A Brief History of Atlantis

Six Flags Atlantis, later operated as Atlantis the Water Kingdom, was a water park in Hollywood, Florida that occupied 65 acres on the southeastern corner of Interstate 95 and Stirling Road. Originally planned to be called Atlantis The Water Kingdom, this forgotten Six Flags water park had a difficult time from the start.

A Difficult Start

Six Flags Atlantis opened in 1989 and was met with mixed reviews. Some praised the park for its large size and impressive water slides, while others criticized it for its high prices and lack of shade. The park also struggled to attract visitors due to its location, which was far from the major tourist areas of Orlando and Miami.

Decline and Closure

In the early 1990s, Six Flags Atlantis began to decline in popularity. The park was often closed due to lack of attendance, and the water slides and other attractions began to show their age. In 1995, Six Flags sold the park to a group of investors who renamed it Atlantis the Water Kingdom. However, the park continued to struggle, and it closed for good in 2001.

The Site Today

The site of Six Flags Atlantis is now occupied by a shopping center called The Shops at Pembroke Gardens. However, some remnants of the water park can still be seen, including the iconic water slides and the wave pool. Atlantis the Water Kingdom may be gone, but it remains a fond memory for many South Floridians.
